What to expect when you start counselling

Many people don't know what to expect from counselling or their counsellor. It's so important that you feel comfortable with your counsellor as research shows that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is key to someone achieving their personal goals and aims. You may have a clear focus of what you want to explore or there may be a range of issues impacting on your every day life that you need to make sense of and resolve.

It is understandable that you may feel anxious about making contact and starting counselling. Rest assured, I will do my best to put you at ease and assure you that I will go at your pace - you only have to share what you feel comfortable sharing and when you feel ready to. At your first appointment we will complete an Initial Assessment together which gathers information including your reasons for seeking support and about various aspects of your current and past emotional and physical well-being.

Together we can then draw up a plan of how we will work which is tailored to meet your individual needs and keeps focus on you and your desired outcomes and aims for the sessions. By coming for this first appointment, you are not obligating yourself to attend for further sessions and you may opt out of continuing counselling at any time.

I am happy to answer any questions you may have prior to making your first appointment. I can also offer you a free 15 minute telephone consultation where we can discuss whether I am the right therapist for you and if I feel I can offer the help you need. Please feel free to get in touch and find out more , or please my FAQ page for more info.
